Galeano believes that the history of Latin America can be compressed into tales of the Indian suffering upon behalf of his or her country's inherent wealth (Winn 5).

Latin America's continuing colonial legacy, its frustration in economic development, has been due to a lack of capital, coupled with its abundance of cheap labor (Galeano 41). The problem of labor inadequately rewarded eventually effects the culture itself adversely. When a people are both physically and culturally dominated, an extreme apathy may develop. Tradition- ally when slaves were removed from their homeland, the expression of their dissatisfaction surfaced as a passive resistance. Occurring as a rejection of oppression and a channeling of trauma, a slave's disposition sometimes adopted a stance of ladinismo, the pretense of doing chores but actually performing them only partially and inefficiently. Choosing a passive indifference as opposed to an active resistance generated negative work habits which further contributed to impeding the subculture's own advance (Davis, Flight and Confrontation 28).
