The black ministers and their churches made the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-1956 the success that it was. Had it not been for the ministers and the support they received from their wonderful congregations, the outcome of the boycott might have been different (54).
Originally, it was intended to keep the boycott a secret so it would be a surprise to the white community, but the word leaked out and actually made the boycott a much bigger affair from the first than it might otherwise have been. The first step was a meeting at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church where more than 100 leaders met and organized with special committees to focus on different aspects of the issue:
