Emerson's self-reliant individual thinks for himself or herself, and therefore has the right to partake of pornography, deciding its worth and its place, or lack thereof, in his or her own life, without reference to the views of others. He or she does not, on the other hand, have the right to drive drunk, for such action infringes of the rights of others to move about the community safely, and such action also violates the freedom and integrity of the drunk driver as well. Emerson depicts the self-reliant individual as an independent thinker who looks to his own mind and to God for guidance, who is separate in an important way from the forces of society and history. This does not mean, however, that the individual is entirely separate from society, or not responsible in certain ways to others in that society.
