reco-Roman classicism, Donatello also combined the newer style, realism, with the more classical elements of his statue of St. George.

Donatello's first attempt to deal with the problems of space in a marble statue occurred when he began carving a shallow marble panel in 1415. The panel was later placed under his marble statue of St. George at Or San Michele (Avery 47). The panel depicts the story of St. George slaying a small dragon with a long sword while riding bareback and dressed in a Roman cloth which is sunk low on his muscled torso. The sculptor conveys the story in relatively little space, leaving room to insert a beautiful woman watching his heroic feat. The woman stands fully clothed in front of five tall Roman columns which were typical of the period's architecture. In the background are rows of trees which diminish in size and are barely scratched on the surface of the marble, giving the illusion that the trees are seen through fog or from great distance.
