The determination of who is mad and who is not involves an act of separation, separating the mad from the non-mad, and the tactics of separation are indicated by the author. The determination is in part culturally decided, and some behavior is considered mad in one culture and not in another. For that matter, some cultures tolerate the madman and some do not, at least on certain levels of behavior. This is a problem for the illness model, since an illness should be objective rather than subjective, occurring for reasons having nothing to do with culture and everything to do with physical changes and responses.
