The second ultimate issue is that work requirements should be imposed in order to get people to work rather than simply to take funds from the government. Welfare has become an entitlement that is also a lifestyle so that people become accustomed to it and do not develop a necessary work ethic to get themselves off welfare and into the workforce. Welfare nurtures dependence, when in fact it should help create and encourage independence. This is a morality issue in that welfare is creating its own future problems. We need to instill the work ethic in people on welfare so that they will learn to fend for themselves and thus will reduce the burden on the system.
