be the standard in twenty years. The powers will not be the same, of course - although some will reappear from the past. The European Community, the United States, and Japan will be at the core of this future balance of powers. They will be in their positions for economic, geographic, and military reasons. These three powers will be the chief competitors - and the chief allies - of the future.

Japan is the most industrialized nation in Asia today. It will retain its current, core, power position well into the future. It is not improbable that there will be an alliance with Taiwan and Singapore/Malaysia - possibly expanding to include Korea, Thailand and the Philippines.

Geography will play the major role in the European Community's core placement. The E.C.'s strong position will come from the fact that it joins a majority of the world's industrialized nations under one organizational roof - a very strong economic factor.
