DNA fingerprinting evidence

An x-ray is taken of the sample which can then be compared to x-rays of other DNA samples.9

In the second process, using extreme heat and cold, the number of alleles in a DNA sample is amplified, creating millions of alleles where only one may have been present before. Next, a probe is added to the sample. If the desired allele is present, the probe will attach itself to it. Finally, the sample is placed on x-ray film, where a dot will appear if the probe has connected with the allele being sought. This gives a simple yes or no answer, which is somewhat of a drawback. Thus, a series of probes is necessary in order to distinguish between individuals with any degree of certainty.10

Before novel scientific evidence can be admitted in a court proceeding, the court must screen the underlying technique to ensure the reliability of its results. The legal admissibility of DNA typing evidence can be determined only after deciding what legal standard should govern. The majority of jurisdictions still use the test set forth in Frye v. United States, but an i
