The real gaps in information in this matter are mentioned only in the last paragraph, when Crombie cites "cultural and social conditions [that] may modify the effect of unemployment in different countries" (415). Indeed, social and cultural variables, imprecise as they area, seem far more useful avenues of study for obtaining useful psychological information than statistical charting from which no definite conclusions can be drawn. The studies may be more difficult to interpret, but that surely is at least partly a function of more thoughtful research design.
