r--we know what it is to be living, and we know that its opposite is to be dead. Death comes from living, and therefore living must come from being dead. This demonstrates, says Socrates, that our souls must exist in the underworld.
A different argument ensues at 102b through 107a, a discussion related to the source and nature of qualities. One of the participants, hearing this discussion, states that this was precisely the opposite of what they had argued earlier. The issue raised is tallness and shortness, and according to the earlier argument tallness came from shortness and shortness from tallness. In this later argument, though, Socrates has said that tallness is an inherent quality within us, as is shortness. Tallness cannot aspire to be shortness, and shortness cannot become tallness.
