In contrast, for those Asian-Americans who recently immigrated, there is sure to be problematic issues relative to their understanding of medical terminology. Given that the health-care professional may not be aware of the existence of medical terminology difficulty for either the first-generation Asian-American client or the newly immigrated Asian-American client, it is his or her job to determine this before proceeding with the indicated assessment, examination, test, etc. (Kramm, 1988; Sue & Sue, 1990). As well, the health-care professional must have some knowledge of the communication practices of Asian-Americans.
