In contrast, for those Asian-Americans who recently immigrated, there is sure to be problematic issues relative to their understanding of medical terminology. Given that the health-care professional may not be aware of the existence of medical terminology difficulty for either the first-generation Asian-American client or the newly immigrated Asian-American client, it is his or her job to determine this before proceeding with the indicated assessment, examination, test, etc. (Kramm, 1988; Sue & Sue, 1990). As well, the health-care professional must have some knowledge of the communication practices of Asian-Americans. As an example of the relevance of this, Sue and Sue (1990, p. 54) report that Asians, particularly the Japanese and Chinese, consider the restraint of strong feelings (i.e., anger, irritation, sadness, love or happiness, and pain) to be evident of maturity and wisdom.
