As stated earlier, lepidolite is found in lithium-bearing pegmatites and some greisen cavities. It can be found with spodumene, amblygonite, tourmaline, cassiterite, beryl and quartz. Amblygonite and zinnwaldite can also be found (Deer and Zusman, 1962, p. 90). Besides lithium, lepidolite has also been found in granites and aplites, and sometimes has been discovered in high temperature, tin-bearing veins.

Since lepidolite is most often found in pegmatites, it is mainly derived by metasomatic replacement of biotite, or more often, muscovite. Lepidolite can grow over muscovite, and when this occurs, the over-growths are usually fibrous or granular, but can be well-crystallized, and in parallel growth with the core material.
