Findings of the study showed significant differences in the academic achievement, school attendance, referrals for disciplinary action, and involvement in extracurricular activities of students from single-parent and two-parent families. In this regard, it was found that single parent students were less likely than two-parent peers to have high achievement or to be involved in extracurricular activities. They were more likely to be frequently absent from school and to be referred for disciplinary action.

Even early research has shown that living in single parent homes is associated with depressed levels of academic achievement.
