Ethnic Conflict in Bosnia

were deeply affected by the ideals of the French Revolution. Twenty years after the defeat of Napoleon, a nationalist movement developed, primarily as a linguistic and literary movement. It created a feeling of common interest between the Slovenes and the Croats as they opposed the Germanizing and Magyarizing tendencies of the Austrians and the Hungarians in their territories, but it also looked beyond to political objectives including the creation of an autonomous Slav union including the Serbs. The second strand was found in the Turkish-held lands south of the Sava and the Danube where the serbs were always in favor of complete separation from the Ottoman Empire. Throughout the period of Ottoman rule Serbian outlaw bands had operated against the Sultan's representatives. These outlaws would form the core of the forces brought together during the Serbian revolts (Singleton, 1976, 43-45).

Serbian independence was created by the peasant masses. In Croatia, nationalist sentiment was fostered instead by an intellectual minority (Nyrop, 1981, 13).
