there will be a differential change in the quality of life of caregivers of individuals with mental health and/or alcohol diagnoses depending on how patients' mental health and/or substance abuse care is managed.

If these goals and the project specific objectives listed above are achieved, they will contribute to a better understanding of the differential effectiveness of the integrated staff approach versus the referral approach in the delivery of mental health and substance abuse services to limited income and minority elders in a major urban setting.

2. Background: Depression, anxiety and alcohol misuse are all common and disabling disorders in older adults, particularly in older African Americans (Areßn & Miranda, 1996; Areßn, Robinson & Hicks, 1997, Liberto, Olsin, Ruskin, 1992, Unntzer et al 1997).
