Team Members & Team Management

Members of a team should understand the culture of the company and be familiar with the company's unique business problems (VBM, 2004). They must know the standards and guidelines which relate to the application of technical solutions within the organization. It is important that the team members have a pre-developed network of contacts to help them achieve their goals, and they should have a personal stake in the outcome of the project.

A well-rounded team will have members who intimately understand the current process, who are experts - they can be experts at any level in the organization (BPR, 2004). Other members must be people who understand the company and work closely with customers. The team also needs members who are technical wizards and can help solve problems with their expertise. A team also benefits from having some members, who can be outside consultants, who can be completely objective about the project. Consultants can provide specialized technical or industry knowledge and bring proven business solutions to the table from their experience with similar clients and businesses (VBM, 2004). Consultants also do not have to worry about internal politics of the company, so can offer opinions openly and freely. Often team members who are not familiar with a particular project are useful because they can provide a fresh outlook on the project, and on any problems which may be occurring, as can outside consultants (BPR, 2004; VBM, 2004).
