Howard Stern's approach to talk radio created a number of problem for him and the company that employs him because the FCC has levied fines against him on several occasions because of the language he has used and the subject matter he has brought to his show. The FCC started fining Stern in 1990, and soon the fine increased to more then one million dollars. Stern is employed by Infinity Broadcasting, and that company fought the fines. Stern fought back by using the FCC as one of his targets on his show, and he cast himself as a victim of government censorship (Laufer 63-64).

Infinity Broadcasting did bow to pressure form some viewers by announcing that it was adding a seven-second delay to Stern's broadcast so he could be cut off if he said something untoward. Infinity did not do more about Stern because even with the fines, his show is highly lucrative. Stern's financial arrangements with the company were revealed in a lawsuit, showing that at just one of the more than a dozen radio stations playing his show, Stern was being paid $750,000 for the first year, $850,000 the second, and one million the third.
