about the past (in the early part of the play) in stark contrast to her comments later in the play. Then, preparing to leave Torvald at the end of the play, she is asked by him if she hasn't been happy, and she answers, "No; never. I used to think I was; but I haven't ever been happy" (Ibsen 1368).
