Diagnosis of breast cancer is done primarily with mammograms (McCartney, 2001; NCI, 2003). However, between 10 percent and 13 percent of breast cancers do not show up on mammograms, and a similar number of mammograms show breast cancer which does not show up on a physical exam. Small calcium deposits often show up on mammograms, and so a biopsy may be needed before a diagnosis of breast cancer can be made. A fine needle biopsy removes fluid and/or cells from the breast lump and cells are checked to see if they are cancerous.
