ory parallels gene theory in that just as genes are propagated from one generation to the next and impart traits to individuals, so memes propagate from generation to generation by leaping from brain to brain in a process called imitation (Dawkins, 1976). Examples of memes are ideas, tunes, clothing fashions and ways of making pots or building arches. If an idea catches on, it propagates by jumping from brain to brain. He believes that these memes are realized physically, millions of times over, as a structure in the nervous system.

The meme concept can be applied to the inequalities in educational resources referred to by Kozol in Savage Inequalities

in that there is an idea that seems to have propagated among educators and those funding education that Blacks and Hispanics and poor Whites do not deserve the same kind of education as those in the higher socioeconomic bracket, that they are beyond redemption and that money spent on them will
