The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves, and controls the regulatory and communicating systems of the body (Applegate, 2000, 153-154). It acts with the endocrine system to maintain homeostasis, the steady state of the body. The brain and spinal cord comprise the central nervous system, and the peripheral nerves the peripheral nervous system, which is divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. Stimulus along a nerve is by propagated action potentials known as nerve impulses in unmyelinated nerves and saltatory conduction in myelinated nerves (158-160).
