The circumstances under which Officer Jones entered the suite have no direct bearing on the subsequent events that led to the siezure of suspected marijuana and the arrest of Frank Platt. However, they are sufficiently proximate as to become part of the trial record, and so peculiar as to provide grist for any competent defense counsel. At best, jurors might regard the whole case as frivolous, or come to suspect that Platt was "set up" by his roommate. Neither of these attitudes should have any bearing on the case, but can still be expected to influence jurors, who are human beings. At worst, the circumstances might be used (however unfairly) to implant in the jury a suspicion that Officer Jones conducted an illegal search.
