According to the architect, his architectural firm was hired to complete an initial design plan followed by a three-phase construction program which included the design of more than 56,000 square feet of new space (Pastier, 1985, p. 202). One of the goals of the initial design plan was "to introduce a more human scale" to the buildings on campus (Gehry, 1985, p. 220). Thus, the architect decided to build several small individual buildings which would not make new students think that the campus was overwhelmingly large or intimidating. As Gehry had often contemplated and achieved in previously designed structures (Forsha, 1983, p. 40), the architect's plans for the law school buildings sought to use space, shape, volume and light in a manner that evoked humanistic elements of architectural design.
