Carballo-Dieguez (1989) has noted that initial reactions of many people upon learning that they have been infected with the HIV virus are those of anxiety, depression and suicidal reaction. The author feels that these initial responses need to be focused on more by therapists; and that they have to be addressed in terms of the patient's cultural or ethnic background. Carballo-Dieguez feels that it is only by addressing these two factors that the therapist will be fully able to help the patient deal with his feelings.
