velopment must be performed within a framework that recognizes both the existence and the implications of the political and spiritual unity in the societal structure, and the role of the social elite in the development and administration of the country.
Following this introductory chapter, the findings of this study are presented in five additional chapters. The topics addressed in these chapters are as follows:
1. Economic theory relevant to growth and development is reviewed in Chapter 2. This review provides the theoretical framework for the examination of the influence of Saudi Arabia's crude oil resource and the exploitation of that resource on the development of the country's economy and Saudi society.
2. Islamic values are reviewed in Chapter 3. As Saudi Arabia is an Islamic country in practice as well as in name, an appreciation of Islamic values is necessary to understand the Saudi approach to development.
3. The development and functioning of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), together with the role of Saudi Arabia in that organization, is examined in Chapter 4. Because Saudi Arabia was a founding member of and remains a major force in OPEC, the country's development of crude oil resources is best understood within the context of OPEC. 4. The development of the Saudi economy is examined in Chapter 5. Economic development in Saudi Arabia encompasses far more that the exploitation of the country's crude oil resource.
5. The economic and social outcomes of the development of Saudi Arabia's crude oil resource are examined in Chapter 6. These outcomes are the benefits and deficits attributable to the effects of the development of the Saudi crude oil resources, as those benefits and deficits are reflected in the conditions prevailing in the country.
