Even this level, however, was half again as high as the construction costs of French nuclear power generating plants. Commonwealth Edison, however, was not as efficient in the construction of all of its plants, as it was in the case of the LaSalle plant. The cost of that company's Marble Hill plant was at the $3,000 per kilowatt hour of capacity level, when the company terminated the construction (Cook, 1984, p. 81).
Other examples of the disparity in construction costs can also be cited. In North Carolina, the Duke Power Co. brought its McGuire II plant on line at construction costs of only $881 per kilowatt hour, while, in New York, projection for the Shoreham plant approximated $4,500 per kilowatt hour of capacity (Weschler, 1984, p. 71).
