Effects of Divorce Whenever two people interact, confl

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Whenever two people interact, conflicts may arise and one person or both may want to end the relationship. This is true not only of marriage but other relationships as well. However, unlike most relationships, marriage involves civil, legal, and/or religious ties that specify if and how the relationship ends. Termination of the relationship in accord with these specifications is termed divorce and, according to Clarke-Stewart, Friedman and Koch (1990), there are well over one million divorces in America every year. Further, over 70 percent of these divorcing families have children.

Divorce is accompanied by a variety of psychoemotional and social effects on all family members. However, children can often be its greatest victims. This paper examines a sampling of the current literature on the effects of divorce on children.

Furstenberg (1990) has compiled a comprehensive review of the existing literature on divorce in America. In terms of the specific effects of divorce on children, Furstenberg (1990) reports that these can vary depending upon the ages of the child. For example, preschoolers may begin wetting the bed or stuttering. School-age children can develop fears such as being afraid to spend the night at a friend's house. Adolescents may withdraw or become over-engrossed with friends, school, or work. However, for children of any age, the disruption of the family can operate to intensify any pre-existing feelin

djustment and substance use. Also, a gender difference was found in the timing of the effects of divorce, with boys demonstrating ill effects after the divorce but not prior to the separation. On the other hand, girls showed negative reactions prior to the separation but these did not become worse after the divorce. In a study of some of the more positive consequences of divorce on children, Jenkins (1987) explored the relationship between creative thinking components and family change caused by parental separation. Interest in the relationship between creativity and family change originally derived from studies that reported early parental loss among eminent people. Jenkins (1987) hypothesized that personal efforts to cope with fluctuating levels of separation-related stress evoke thought processes that exercise creative thinking abilities. The subjects of the study were 116 third, fourth, and fifth graders from seven rural public school districts in Central New York State. Half of the children were from single parent families and half were from intact families. Tests used were the Group Inventory for Finding Creative Talent, the Revised Art Scale, and the Family Environment Scale. The find
