aches have more personality abnormalities and/or emotional disorders than their healthy counterparts. The sample consisted of 162 young adults (aged 2229 yrs) with classical migraine headaches.

All subjects were contacted by a community telephone survey. Their responses were then compared with matched controls that did not suffer from migraine headaches.

Findings showed that on the General Health Questionnaire, the prevalence of psychological symptoms among those with migraines was 2.5 times the prevalence among the controls. Also, women with migraines had significantly higher scores on the Psychoticism and Neuroticism scales, and lower scores on the Lie Scale, of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. Results were said to suggest that classical migraine patients did have both emotional and psychological abnormalities of personality.

Sorbi and Tellegen (1984) did find some support for the emotional inhibition hypothesis in a study of methods of appraisal and coping in situation
