These compounds are important in brain metabolism; in particular, they play a major role in the synthesis of sulfated mucopolysaccarides (glycosaminoglycans) and sulfatides (cerebroside sulfate). The sulfate containing biochemical compounds are necessary for the physiological processes of brain maturation. Sulfate containing chemicals are also required in the myelination process. The paper concludes by noting that malnutrition, when it coincides with the period of active myelination, may adversely affect the synthesis of various lipids in the brain.

The paper reviews the more common neurological disorders encountered in India. Various conditions are discussed including infection (poliomyelitis, Japanese B encephalitis, tuberculosis, and leprosy), cerebrovascular disease, paraplegias, and systemic degenerations. In addition, diet is examined. It is noted that large sections of India's population subsist on borderline diets. In Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh, where the diet consists mainly of maize and millet, pellagra is common. Overall though, the population's diet tends to be low in animal fat. This circumstance may possibly correlate with the country's exceptionally low prevalence of multiple sclerosis.
