But Hitler also had ambitions for power and thought programmatically enough to organize and act on them.

The idea that Hitler used a host of means to seize and maintain his power is developed in detail by Bullock, who says that Hitler embodied a "mixture of calculation [i.e., cynical politician] and fanaticism" and that what makes Hitler unique is that it is difficult sometimes to see where calculation ends and fanaticism begins.
