ndards and college athletics are the role of athletics in collegelevel education and the use of standardized test scores to determine eligibility for participation in varsity sports. Each of these issues is discussed and analyzed.

Many people on each side of the Proposition 48 controversy agree that participation in varsity sports can be an educational vehicle in the development of the full potential of young people (Lapchick, 1988, pp. 3545). Proponents of Proposition 48 contend that the rule increases the probability that varsity sports will fulfill such a role by providing a minimal floorlevel for academic performance (a C+, or 2.5 on a scale of 4.0, average in 13 core courses in high school, and a score of 18 on the American College Test or a score of 700 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test) by those individuals participating in varsitylevel sports (Wieberg, 1993a, p. 1A).
