A balkanization of society brought about through a process of cultural pluralism would likely lead to greater societal stability than would assimilation. Assimilation does tend to enjoy some success over the very longterm. Roman Catholic Irish and Italian communities are by now well assimilated into American society. These groups, however, also want some of their own values assimilated into American life. One example is the Roman Catholic position on abortion, the attempt ofwhich to force on the American population majority through assimilation has created significant societal instability. A 4culturally pluralistic society, by contrast, could permit each population group to observe its own values, without the need to develop some new value to apply to all.
