Health care givers are frequently exposed to death and dying situations (McKay, 1991, pp. 15). If health care givers are to be able to sustain both themselves and their patients in death and dying situations they must be aware of their own beliefs toward death and of their own approach of their work in such situations (McKay, 1991, pp. 15). McKay (1991, pp. 15) suggests that health care givers who work continually with dying people must (1) explore their motives for choosing such work, (2) examine their professional goals in relation to working with the dying, (3) determine how they regard their own death and the death of their patients, (4) identify the defenses they use to protect themselves from the emotional impact of dying and death, and (5) establish strategies for the management of both stress and bu
