Ties were less strong among younger voters, and among new voters and this was the cause of the loss of partisanship voting in the late 1960s (Nie, Verba and Petrocik 63). The young voters didn't enter with such a strong commitment to the party as older voters who had been in the party for years. There was also a decline in intergenerational transfer of party ties ta this time. Also, when the younger generation began to evaluate parties more negatively, this also drew along some of the older, established voters, and so weakened party loyalty in them too.
