tantinopolitan Creed established at Constantinople in 381 C.E. The Nicene Creed "became the ecumenical symbol of the unity of the Church in faith" (p. 5), although it was supplanted by the Apostles' Creed in the West by the Roman Catholic church. The significant difference between the two is the use of the first person plural ("we believe") in the former, and the first person singular ("I believe") in the latter. The only part of either creed which appears to offend some denominations is the reference to baptism as the method for forgiveness of sins.

The premise of Confessing the One Faith is to present a theologically-sound "explication" (i.e., critique, exegesis, interpretation) of the basic convictions of Christianity which is contemporary in its application for mankind and the Church, given the state of affairs in the world today, and which can be "understood and accepted by Christians from different traditions, but does not pretend to solve all theological differences" (p. 4). In doing so, the WCC has examined many of the Greek and Latin words
