vated, therefore will have no stimulus to contract. Only the muscle on one side of the body will be affected.

21.10 If the upper motor neurons supplying a muscle have been destroyed, there will be muscle weakness, but the muscle will still be able to contract because the lower motor neurons are intact, and these are the neurons which directly stimulate the muscle. A reflex response will still exist. Also, if only one branch of the upper motor neurons is affected, the other branch will still be active and can supply an impulse, albeit weaker than with intact upper motor neurons on both sides.

21.11 In flaccid paralysis the muscles are relaxed, and the joints are floppy (A Simple, 2004). There is usually rapid wasting of paralyzed muscles and the reflexes are absent or strongly diminished. In spastic paralysis, the muscles are in a contracted state. There is no voluntary joint movement, but involuntary movement is common. The muscles maintain their bulk, and the reflexes are increased, sometimes to the point of clonic contractions
