Unlike both the psychodynamic and experimental/humanistic models of family therapy, the behavioral model is scientific in orientation which is one reason why it eschews the unconscious which cannot be measured. Thus, the behavioral approach is empirical focusing not on what cannot be seen but what can be seen and measured. What determines family dysfunction therefore are measurable environmental, situational, and social determinants.

The experimental/humanistic model of family therapy, unlike the behavioral model, states that unconscious processes may indeed be present. However, these processes are not postulated to be strongly causal in that any influence
