According to Burden (1982), a learning center can be defined as a self-contained unit that focuses upon strengthening, improving and/or enriching student knowledge and skills in both academic and non-academic areas. Burden notes that learning centers can vary considerably.

For example, a learning center can be small, consisting solely of a corner in a regular classroom or it can be very large and complex such as centers that use video-conferencing and satellite transmission of educational material (Burden, 1982). Moreover, learning centers are not restricted to any particular student group but can be used by both disabled and non-disabled students as well as by at risk non-disabled students and even regular students who are excelling in their school work (Burden, 1982).
