Kaje, the older of the three Swahili women, was raised in a society in which women were secluded from men and from the outside world. Women stayed indoors and rarely ventured into the streets. So absolute was Kaje's seclusion that when her first husband abandoned her, she had great difficulty locating her own childhood home. Once she arrived at the home, her grandmother refused to let her enter. The older woman could only relate to Kaje as "someone's wife" (Mirza and Strobel, 1989, p. 51). After divorcing her first husband, Kaje remarried.
