The purpose will be to determine whether, first, this network describes a unique and coherent entity (that is, are the network ties between say Australia and Canada any stronger than those between Canada and France?), and, second, what is the nature and extent of this structure - what do the boundaries and frontiers of a network civilization look like.
In order to accomplish the goals of this study, a mastery of the field of network analysis must first be accomplished. Thus, this portion of the literature review will be a methodological portion, focusingon what exactly network analysis is.
