incubation period created for use in immunization sera are referred to as the fixed virus (Kaplan, 1986).

The rabies virus moves from the entry site in the body of an animal through sensory nerves to the central nervous system. Once in the central nervous system, the rabies virus multiplies and destroys brain cells. This action typically causes encephalitis, severe excitement, throat spasms when swallowing, convulsions, and death. At times, paralysis occurs between convulsions and death.

The diagnosis of rabies in humans is made by the observation of Negri bodies (produced by the rabies virus) in infected animals believed to have infected a human. A dog which has bitten a human, as an example, is isolated and observed for 10 days. If during that time signs of rabies occur in the dog, the animal is killed and its brain is examined for Negri bodies. If no signs of rabies are observed during the 10 day period, rabies is assumed to be absent in the animal. When a human has been infected with the rabies virus, inoculation must begin within 14 days to prevent the onset of the disease. Inoculation against rabies is not performed for humans with a lowrisk of contracting the disease
