kened, but the perception of the Court as a liberal force really began after the appointment, by Republican President Dwight Eisenhower, of California's Republican Governor Earl Warren as Chief Justice. Beginning with Brown v. School Board, in 1954, which overturned legal school segregation, the Warren Court reached a series of liberal-orientated rulings; "desegregation, internal security, reapportionment, school prayer, and substantive due process decisions," which tended to outrage conservatives (Wiecek, 1988, p. 182). By the end of the 1950s, the right-wing John Birch Society was erecting billboards proclaiming "Impeach Earl Warren" (p. 182).
Among the Court's rulings, as it moved into the 1960s, were several which touched on criminal procedures. Stricter rules were applied to the admissibility of evidence seized by police in the absence of a search warrant. New restrictions were also placed on police interrogation of arrested suspects, in Rogers v. Richmond (1961) and Malloy v. Hogan (1964) (Spaeth, 1966, pp. 300-315). According to a contempora
