THE EMERALD FOREST The Emerald Forest is a 1985

The film jumps from the realization that Tommy has been kidnapped to ten years later. Tommy has become "Tomme," a perfectly integrated and socialized member of the Invisible People tribe, and he is out learning the ways of the rain forest with his "father," the tribal chief who kidnapped him. The chief tells him to "allow for the water bending the arrow- when shooting fish in the river; "Beware, it's a very hungry jaguar that hunts fish"; and other jungle homilies. Soon after, Tomme's coming-of-age ceremony begins. He is covered in honey and then placed out for the stinging ants, who swarm over him. This scene involves numerous close-up shots of the ants on the boy, who is in agony; finally, the camera draws back, and the scene switches to the pronouncement of Tomme's manhood as he is dunked in water.

Meanwhile, Tomme's real father has set out on his most recent trek to find Tomme. At night, he sets out "gifts" such as hunting knives and other metal objects to attract the Indians. Then, the film switches back to Tomme's tribe. The Indians celebrate his initiation rite, and Tomme is given a hallucinogenic. A bird of prey is shown to be Tomme's spiritual animal, a proud flyer with a sharp, curved beak. The bird's point of view becomes Tomme's, and Tomme realizes that his mission to manhood must be to go to the Sacred Stones and bring some back.

The title of the film is perhaps a nod to the green paint these stones provide or perhaps it mainly refers to the brilliant green of the rain forest itself. This mission also becomes a way for him to win a young girl named Kachiri for his mate. The "Fierce People"-a neighboring, warlike tribe-had driven Tomme's tribe away from that area, so Tomme will be proving his courage and resourcefulness by bringing back stones from there.
