Composer Witold Lutoslawski

After the war, Lutoslawski worked mostly for Polish radio, writing every imaginable type of music, mostly incidental, while composing his first symphony in private. In 1945, he wrote Three Carols, for solo voices, unison chorus and chamber ensemble. This set of pieces, while more ambitious than the utilitarian music he produced for radio, was not a masterwork, and his main concentration remained with the symphony.

The First Symphony was finally completed in 1947; however, soon after, Poland fell under the rule of the Soviet government, its neighbor to the east. Once again, Polish culture was to undergo a dramatic change, and Polish composers were driven underground. Since Lutoslawski still worked for the radio, he had a means of supporting himself, although he did receive criticism for his symphony.
