With respect to the ecological approach, it can be seen that it moves away from notions that the behavior is the result of either a sick parent or a sick society. Rather, the approach characterizes the behavior as explained by social and personal stresses which disrupt family coping abilities. As the stress increases and in the absence of a social support network, the likelihood of child abuse increases. Prevention efforts based on this model combines therapy (usually family oriented therapy) with efforts aimed at remediating stress from social conditions.
