Some evidence exists that indicates that school uniforms do reduce certain tensions and violence. The Long Beach Unified School District in California was the first U.S. public school system to require uniforms for elementary and middle school students, and the District reports the program a success. There were decreases in crime and suspensions, in incidents of fighting and acts of vandalism. Other school districts that require school uniforms also report positive results.

In conclusion, school uniforms help erase cultural and economic differences among students, reduce some sources of conflict and lead to less violence and tensions, with greater focus on school work and success. Uniforms cannot solve all discipline problems, but they can be a positive factor.

Letter grades have been standard for teacher assessment of how well a child is doing in a given subject. In recent years, there has been a move toward other systems of assessment that more fully evaluate a student's mastery of a given discipline, and provide parents with a more comprehensive and individualized assessment. These other systems replace letter grades with a four-point number-ranking system, or a portfolio of each student's work indicating progress made, or just narrative comments on how well a child is doing in a subject. Some people believe letter grades are simpler and sufficient, while others hold that the numerical or other systems are better. Letter grades need to be used in high school because many students need a grade point average to get into college. The premise of this essay is that the numerical system should be used in grades K-8 because that system provides a more accurate assessment.
