Boyle's Law Investigation

The purpose of this laboratory was to investigate Boyle's Law. A 150 mL Erlenmeyer flask was closed and a pressure gauge was attached to it. The flask was filled with 1 atm of propane gas, after the air was flushed from the flask. The pressure and volume of the gas sample were recorded. Next, the total volume available to the gas was reduced by adding water to the flask in small increments of 20mL through the stopper using a syringe. The new pressure and volume of the gas were recorded after each addition of water. This procedure was repeated until a total of 100 mL of water had been added, with the pressure and volume of the gas recorded after each water addition. The whole procedure was then repeated using butane gas.

Graphs were prepared of the data for propane gas for pressure and volume, with volume on the x-axis and pressure on the y-axis, and a data table was prepared. Another graph was prepared using the reciprocal of volume on the x-axis, and pressure on the y-axis. For the butane experiment a graph of the data was prepared with the reciprocal of volume on the x-axis and pressure on the y-axis, and a straight line was drawn through the data points.

A data table was prepared for butane.
