Hospers believes that it is the unconscious that determines what our conscious behavior will be. However, Hospers does not agree with the psychoanalysts' definition of freedom and moral responsibility. As Hospers views it, both the neurotic and nonneurotic are similar due to the fact that they did not shape their own situation or character. Hospers feels that neurotics

are not responsible because their behavior is the consequence of childish and unconscious conflicts that they did not originate themselves. Thus, Hospers also suggests that a nonneurotic character is also the result of causes he did not create and are not within his control.
