Effects of Divorce on Children

d parents ever since health professionals began recording them in the middlenineteenth century. Generalized effects range from depression to withdrawal, and more serious and longlasting effects have been recorded. Behavioral changes and maladjustment problems are almost commonplace with children, and most findings showed that the parents who had less marital conflict had better relationships with their children after separation, which in turn was associated with more adaptive child functioning (Camera and Resnick, 1989). Various solutions have been offered for the more generalized aspects of divorce problems, and they will be dealt with later in this study. However, it appears from clinical trials and the available data that intervention programs are the most successful when dealing with divorce trauma (AlpertGillis, et.al., 1989).

In addition, the role of the woman both within the home and as a professional has changed dramatically in the 1980s and early 1990s. Wives are just as likely not to receive custody of the children, since most work outside the home and would be required to provide adequate day care just as the husband. Moreover, recent changes in divorce law often focus more on the rights of the children, and judges attempt to place the child in the most conducive environment. In fact, the entire issue of coparenting revolves around the notion that it is necessary to make the transition of divorce as painless as possible for the child and to provide an enriching environment for the child of any age (Dornbusch and Strober, eds., 1988).

Of course, children of varying ages respond differently to the concept of divorce. Preschool children, for instance, are often multisymptomatic during the transition period from one parent's home to the other.
