Media interest in Watergate began changing dramatically in late July, 1972. At that time, a reporter from the New York Times made a definite connection between the Watergate break-in and the Committee to Re-Elect the President. Specifically, an article in the New York Times indicated that one of the Watergate burglars had placed at least fifteen telephone calls from Miami to the President's Committee (Bernstein and Woodward, 1987, p. 35). With that revelation, Benjamin Bradlee (editor of the Washington Post) and Katherine Graham (publisher of the Post) decided to put Woodward and Bernstein on the case full-time. Soon, it was discovered that the Committee to Re-Elect the President was involved in some kind of money laundering scheme in which illegal finances were being used to support the campaign.
